Artist’s Bio

Simkin de Pio (b. 1976, Philippines)

Sim started painting at an early age and exhibiting in his teens. He learned and observed techniques of painting human figures and portraits from his father Gig. In 1996, he was awarded honorable mention at the Shell National Student’s Art Competition for his painting ‘Siete Noong Setenta’ and in 1997 he placed honorable mention again at the Shell National Art Competition for his painting, ‘Julian’, his youngest brother.

In 2007, Simkin opened his first solo exhibition, Personification, at Galerie Astra and The Room Upstairs. Point of Inflection, Lost in Thought, and Star-crossed Voyage In This Archipelagic State of Mine, are examples of his works in this genre. De Pio’s works emphasize his ideas about language, history and the human condition. In his works, de Pio explores into Filipino history, figures/forms, portraits and still lifes.

​Born Simkin de Pio on March 17, 1976 in Quezon City, Sim is the eldest of five children of Gig de Pio, a painter and Fe Esterlina. He is married to Roselle and father to Dewayne, Kalila and Noah. He studied at O.B. Montessori School in elementary then to Ateneo de Manila University where he graduated high school in 1994. During his education at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts in Diliman, de Pio learned techniques and ideas from Ruben David Defeo, Roberto Feleo and Roberto Chabet, to name a few. After gaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1998, de Pio worked as a graphic artist and freehand illustrator at the UP NISMED from 1998-1999, AMA Computer University Head Office from 2002-2003 and PetPlans Inc. from 2003-2005. In 2007, he taught Philippine Art History at the De La Salle College of St. Benilde and then pursued an Art Teacher and graphics designer position at Xavier School in San Juan from 2007-2011.He ran an artist-run gallery, Formafuego Artist Space, before painting full time in his studio in Quezon City, Manila, Philippines.
